A Dancing Flame - Summer 2010

For the past few days..weeks even, it has felt more like Winter then Summer.  We have gotten maybe 1-2 days of Summer then we plunge straight back into Winter weather again.  My little fire Fay was to be a spark, some warmth in all this cold weather, little did I realize just how much warmth.

Dancing Flame has turned out to be my first fairy of the season for Summer 2010. With all this cold weather  I had not expected to see her till early next year... She, it seems had other plans.  All she is waiting for now is her plaque and she will be finished.

A Dancing Flame

About two months ago I was out shopping with my mother and we came across two lovely lanterns, one a dark tarnished brown colour and the other a painted white, both of us thought of my art dolls and how beautiful they would look inside the lanterns.

I decided on a fire fairy for the dark lantern and a sort of serene off-white rose fairy for the white lantern.

I started work on my Fire Fay the other day, she is coming along quite well. She will be a poseable art doll, about 7 inches tall, with largish silk wings. She will be going inside the dark tarnished brown lantern.

She is in the oven now for her final baking, I had to add extra to her upper arms to bring them down further for the dress I have decided to make for her (...at this moment anyway) will show more of her arms and chest.

The Shadows of Nightswood

As promised my goon Boggut. A rather unfriendly looking fella, he is my first art doll from the shadow of Nightswood. He was a gift to a family friend, someone who has always been there whenever there was a need for advice or just a laugh.

Boggut stand alone guarding the overgrown and twisted path that winds its way into the shadows of Nightswood.

New wings + Silk wings!!

I have spent the past week devoted to creating silk wings, and by creating I mean figuring out how on earth to make them!!  It has been a quite an interesting process, alot of trial and error. In the end they worked out quite well. Far better then I had hoped.

I have seen some lovely silk wings on the net but they were all to 'thick' looking for me.  I wanted my silk wings to be very fine, delicate and above all transparent!! A fine whisper of a wing.

I have also been playing around with wire and making some crowns to go with my wings, very frustrating at times, I don't even want to know how many beads I have lost to the floor!! I swear they have a mind of their own.

On another note I have finished a new Art Doll, he is to be a gift to a family friend. He is a Goon and is quite unfriendly looking. The very first doll from the darker side of Nightswood, will post a pick of him once he has arrived at his new home.

Keelia ~ Spring Teacup Fairy

A few weeks back I was looking around in St Vinnies op shop and found three teacups, I bought all 3 of them and they have been sitting on a shelf in the kitchen ever since then waiting for me to start sculpting their fairies..

Something new again, for my teacup fay I decided to try a different way of sculpting the limbs.  After sculpting the head and body I blushed her with dry chalks then she was backed. Once she cooled I started on her limbs, I sculpted core pieces for her thighs and legs and for her arms and forearms, this made it easy for me to play around with her pose till I was satisfied.

...and more wings

I have had alot of fun making these wings, they have sparked so many ideas for my Fay art dolls.  I am going to take a few days off from wing making again to start on some new little and not so little dolls.
I really love making my wings so to keep things even I will be making wings 2 days out of every week and the rest of the time will be for my Art dolls.

So many ideas and so little time...

It has been some time now since I last made my OOAK fairy wings, I have been (not so patiently) waiting for my filigree and Angelina Film to arrive from the US so that I could start making them. My Film arrived last week and yesterday afternoon when I went down to the post office my filigree were sitting there waiting for me!! So I have been busy creating!!

I have one more set of transparent wings to finish off and then I will start on my Angelina Film wings.

I finally finished off my Grandpixie and the two little ones today.  Grandma Burrow turned out far better then I had hoped.

Meet Grandma Burrow, Turfee Burrow and (baby) Wee Burrow

I still have to paint my berry picker and dress her, I have some berries (blackberries and raspberries) that I had made up some time ago, not sure if they will be the right size but we shall see.

Berries and Babies Continued

My two little baby pixies have turned into one baby and one toddler, they have both been baked and have come out really well.  The boots for the berry picker and grandpixie are being baked at the moment, once they are cool I will give the pixies a touch-up with paint and start on their outfits.

Berries! and Babies!

I started work on two little female pixies this afternoon.  The first is to be a young berry picker, and the other an old grandpixie with two baby pixies.

Their faces are completed as well as the grandpixies hands, I just have to finish the berry pickers hands and start work on their shoes and the baby pixies!! but that is for tomorrow.

The Mushroom Picker

His name is Marul Muddle Burrow and he is all finished.

I have decided to keep this little one. I have very few of my treeroot pixies and he is so sweet that I just can't bring myself to sell him.

And you are..?

My internet has been down for a day and a half so I have been sitting in my studio 'playing with the fairies'
This little one has been stuck in my head for a few days now, he talks a lot..quite a lot..  I have yet to catch his name.

I decided to blush this little one with my dry chalks before he was baked, the colours become slightly transparent afterwards which gives a  more fay look.

While he was baking.... I started on a new little one, a sweet gentle little pixie who loves to pick mushrooms. I am not sure if these two know each other.. but I do remember my little chatterbox mentioning something about a shroom ?

His hands have been sculpted and his fingers wraped around the basked handle. All blushed and he is now ready to be baked.

My little mushrooms, they are maddening to make but so very cute.

And you are...? Well this little one is Jest Thwop Dabble, Adventurer, explorer and fortune hunter... Well thats what he tells me anyway.

I am about to fall asleep in my chair.... so I will finish my mushroom picker tomorrow..sleepy so very sleepy..

New Transparent Film Wings

My new transparent wings, I love how they turned out.  The printed ivy background adds to the depth of these wings, so much so that I will be making a lot more wings in this way.

Some more wings

Four new wings, all a little bit different. The last one comes in two sets, top and bottom which can be changed around and turned upside-down to create multiple different styles.

One more to come, it is different from the others, hopefully it will turn out well, it is currently curing … well the glue is anyway.
